First Stop: The California Market Center

The CMC showrooms are having samples sales for women, men, children, and home décor. Don't be fooled, the CMC is HUGE. And by huge we mean it's actually three buildings in one (Suite A, B, and C). Take a look at their directory beforehand so you know where you want to go. Remember, not all showrooms will be having sales. Look for “Sample Sale” signs on the door for the ones who are.

Parking is only $10 for Sample Sales in the CMC’s underground garage. Once you’re parked, we recommend heading up to the 9th floor for Filbert & Fig and Rosenberg Group’s incredible selection of furniture and decorative accessories. Forget Ikea. We’re talking gorgeous couches and dining room tables at a fraction of retail price.

Second Stop: The Cooper Design Space
Cross the street and head on over the Cooper Building for Mother Denim’s sample sale. Snatch yourself a pair of jeans: skinny, flare, boot, cuffed, whatever your heart desires. They have them all.

Update: Ace Hotel reveals plans for United Artists Theatre in Downtown LA

In a recent announcement, Councilmember Jose Huizar confirmed Ace Hotel’s purchase of the iconic United Artists Theatre. The theatre’s 13 floors will be redeveloped into 180 hotel rooms, as well as a pool, restaurant, and bar. The theatre will be reactivated and serve as the main attraction point for the hotel.

Located on Broadway & 9^th Street, the Spanish-Gothic-styled building was originally built by the U.A. to host premieres. It is rumored that much of the inspiration for the design of the building came from U.A. co-founder Mary Pickford’s love of European castles. Judging from the L.A. Historic Theatre Foundation's virtual tour, it does seem fit for a king. What do you think?

Curbed LA reported on December 21, 2011 that an Ace Hotel will open in Broadway’s old United Artists Theatre in the LA Fashion District which was recently purchased by Connecticut-based Greenfield Partners. We originally reported this story in our October 18, 2011 issue of “What’s New”.

This will be LA’s first Ace, a trendy boutique chain that first opened in Seattle in 1999 and now has hip hotels in Portland, Manhattan and Palm Springs.

Trending Holiday Colors Presented by Design Options

With the holiday festivities in the air, figuring out how to decorate your home and what to wear to that party are important concerns during this time of year. Luckily, Design Options, a color and trend forecasting company located in the California Market Center, has prepared some of December's hottest hues in fashion and the home industry in their latest newsletter! Fran Sude, the President of Design Options, recommends to select accessories in shades of well-worn sage, classic khaki and festive scarlet to brighten up the end of the year. (Read below for more)

Vibrant green is nice. But a muted tone is more on-trend this month. Collect your Christmas money in a clover clutch with ecru ribbon detailing. A wool scarf is knit from light emerald yarn. Vintage pendants with mint milk glass shades hang high above a drawing room. Need a few extra chairs around the table: pull some that are upholstered in Hancock green.

Beige doesn’t have to be blah-humbug. It can be a perfect neutral for the season. Bundle up before heading out in a fur-trimmed manteau. Poinsettias would look right at home peeking out from the top of a tan-glazed vase. A buff linen panel billows in the winter wind. Sport a pair of warm tights with camel leather shoes.

You don’t need a good reason for red because it is the color of the season. Reach for a ruby cable knit sweater on blustery days. Reading holiday cards is made easier with a pair of scarlet spectacles. While awaiting your turn to talk to Santa, sit in a row of round-backed chairs. A red acrylic cubby is the perfect place to tuck gift-wrapping supplies.

With the weather outside being so frightful, why not stay inside the mall where the temperatures are delightful? While you are there, pick up a few items to perk up your personal style and home décor. This December keep a lookout for lovely accents in soft green, basic beige, and holly red. Spread cheer by spreading bold hues throughout your life this holiday month!

Winter Weekend Look: The Statement Jacket

A big trend for Fall/Winter 2011, due to the colder weather, is coats. And what we're seeing on the runway is that this style no longer serves as just a practical function, but it is now the statement piece of the outfit. Designers such as Versace and Michael Kors as well as major retailers like J.Crew and Madewell offer a variety of designs such as fur-trimmed jackets, bold colored coats in canary yellow and rouge red, 40's inspired capes and outwear in a mix of textures.

We've translated this trend for a casual weekend look, appropriate for this holiday season. We selected this military-inspired coat from 62nd Street Boutique, a store in the LA Fashion District. This stylish, army green coat has unique features such as the zipper details and leather lining and belt. We've toned down the edgy element of the outerwear by styling it with laid-back and feminine pieces like the graphic T-shirt and the printed bubble skirt. We topped it off with some elegant pearls to accentuate the festive season. And as a result, we've created a stylish and comfortable outfit to wear for the many occassions this holiday season, from lunch with friends to Christmas shopping!

A Current Affair Returns with Host Rose Apodaca, Artist Rafa Esparza & Music by KCRW DJ Marion Hodges

The fifth edition of A Current Affair: Pop-up Vintage Marketplace will take place this weekend, Saturday December 3rd through Sunday, December 4th at the Cooper Design Space. Bringing together over 30 premier vintage retailers and private dealers from Los Angeles and beyond, A Current Affair presents a unique opportunity to shop a select assortment of exceptional vintage fashion items ranging from accessible wearable to haute couture. Highlights:

Curator, journalist and author Rose Apodaca will host the December edition of A Current Affair and sign copies of her latest book, Fred Hayman—The Extraordinary Difference: The Story of Rodeo Drive, Hollywood Glamour and the Showman Who Sold It All. The former West Coast bureau chief of Women's Wear Daily and a founding editor of The Los Angeles Times "Image" Section, Apodaca will also hand select 10 vintage party looks from throughout the show which will be on exhibit and available for purchase.

Artist Rafa Esparza will exhibit his Gallos Giros Putos Gallones at the December edition of A Current Affair. For the piece, Esparza sculpts roosters using old Nike Cortez sneakers. The birds will be contained to a central exhibit and “perched” throughout the show. This marks the second collaboration between a local artist and A Current Affair, following September’s exhibition of Edith Abeyta’s camp site. A Current Affair is interested in showcasing the works of artists who use found fashion items as a medium.

For the music, KCRW DJ Marion Hodges will provide the beats. Hodges can be heard every other Saturday night/Sunday morning from 3AM to 6AM on 89.9 KCRW, and kcrw.com. Marion has been DJ-ing since the summer of 2007. She co-founded the DJ team Squaregirls, and was a co-creator of the still active indiepop/northern soul dance party, Hungry Beat! The loungier sister of Hungry Beat!, Sophisticated Boom Boom, takes place on the first Saturday of every month at Tony’s Saloon, Downtown Los Angeles. She frequently spins at Wurstkuche (both locations), Grand Star Jazz Club in Chinatown, and various other concert venues around town. At least eighty-five percent of her wardrobe is comprised of vintage items.

Raquel Allegra is perhaps best known for her avant-garde T-shirts made with elaborate shredding techniques and tie-dyed prints. But in just five short years, her collection has matured into a full ready-to-wear line with sophisticated silhouettes made in luxe fabrications.

The Berkeley, Calif.–based Allegra launched her eponymous collection after her T-shirts gained a cult-like following while she worked as a sales associate at Barneys New York in Beverly Hills. The shirts, which were made from recycled tees from the Los Angeles County Jail system, were created with Allegra’s signature shredding technique.

Stretched and tie-dyed, the chic T-shirts and webbed cocoon shapes were an instant hit with celebs and landed in high-end stores, including Maxfield in Los Angeles, Harvey Nichols Hong Kong and Tsum in Russia.

After a runway debut at Boxeight Fashion Week in 2008, followed by Gen Art’s Fresh Faces in Fashion show in 2009, Allegra quickly became a fashion darling on the Los Angeles design scene. During that time she partnered with Tony Graham and his wife, Findings showroom owner Deirdre Roffoni, and the brand evolved into a cut-and-sew collection. Retailers—including high-end specialty boutiques and department stores such as Barneys New York, Lane Crawford and Liberty of London—were quick to pick up the T-shirts, deerskin leggings and one-of-a-kind vintage cashmere pieces.

For Spring 2012, the line has evolved yet again. The recycled vintage jail tees are gone, but the collection retains Allegra’s edgy yet chic design aesthetic with a refined sophistication. The collection includes T-shirts and a complete ready-to-wear line created with the same shredding techniques and original tie-dyed prints in a range of colors and silhouettes. For the first time, the T-shirts and ready-to-wear are made with a cohesive design process in mind.

“I think, now, more than ever, I get to tell a whole story. Before, it’s been in pieces,” Allegra said. “I have more resources to really allow the ideas to grow.”

This season, T-shirts and the wovens were created from Allegra’s favorite prints pulled from her design archives and then photographed and puzzled together by the line’s in-house graphic artist. Allegra plans to employ the same process each season.

“The intention is really to create prints that are directly out of our world, and our language, which again makes the story feel more cohesive and consistent,” she said.

The complete look is casual sophistication with Allegra’s bohemian-chic aesthetic. “When I design a collection, I start from what I’m wearing—what I want to be wearing—everyday. And I just build off of that,” she said.

Blazers are a core piece in Allegra’s own closet. “So I start with [blazers] and layer from there [and create] all the immediate things you want to grab when you are getting dressed in the morning.” T-shirts, blouses and ethereal dresses are a few of the key pieces. Balancing masculine with feminine, the pieces are made to be layered, creating a canvas of rich textures and prints. “I think it’s all really an extension of my personality, how I want to dress, how I want to feel. I think all those different layers and all those different voices and personalities get a place to play in this collection more than ever before,” she said.

The Spring collection was inspired by the character played by actress Sean Young in the ’80s science fiction film “Blade Runner.” The line includes silk dresses, shorts, bodysuits, suits and jumpsuits with a modern-meets-futuristic look. Cashmere sweaters and silk/linen jackets and pants are printed in vibrant tie-dyes, creating an ethnic, sci-fi effect. Casually chic blazers are made to be functional, including one that is reversible and another made in silk chiffon lined with jersey. Blouses and dresses are feminine yet modern, made in fabrics such as a colorful stripe chiffon and a French stretch lace. T-shirts have deconstructed details and come in a range of styles and fabrics, including cotton, micro shadow stripe jersey, and a rayon jersey and twill blend.

A couple of Sundays ago, I stopped by the Patchwork Indie Arts & Crafts Festival in Culver City and left with bags full of Christmas gifts for friends and family, like letterpress stationery, confections from C Salt Gourmet and T-shirts from Hips and Hair -- all made in L.A. I had no intention of starting my holiday shopping just yet, but with December just around the corner, now I'm on a roll.

Next up is Unique LA, one of the biggest independent design shows in the country. The craft show will be held at the California Market Center and will feature more than 325 artists selling jewelry, gourmet edibles, clothing, art, toys and stationery. The two-day event allows those from SoCal to shop local, support L.A.'s economy and check off names on their Christmas lists.

Bike Lanes Coming Soon to Spring Street

Bicyclists at October's CicLAvia event in the LA Fashion District

We are excited to report that our district will be receiving bike lanes on Spring Street! This project is in accordance with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT)'s installation of Downtown's first bike lane, which will be marked in green. The lane will run down Spring Street from Cesar Chavez to 9th Street.
As of today, the project is underway; preliminary lines have been marked for the future lane, which will run between curbside parking and a buffer to separate cyclists from traffic.

Additionally, last week, the LA Fashion District BID staff met with Council District 9 and the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) last week to discuss the bike lane plans. We are happy to report that LADOT listened to our recommendation to maintain street parking spaces. Also, bike lane construction will be postponed until after the holiday shopping season.

Style | Gallery Boutique Propels Retail Transformation on LA Street

For decades, Los Angeles Street in the LA Fashion District has been the destination for menswear, selling tuxedos, dress shoes and other accessories. But in recent years, this street is transforming into a hip, retail hot spot featuring edgy and independent designers for the fashionable. Some notable boutiques that have been pioneers in setting up a brick and mortar are the Cooper Store, a boutique that sells past designer merchandise pulled from showrooms at the Cooper Design Space and MartinMartin, an avant-garde women’s and men’s luxury clothing collection that has been featured in British Vogue, The New York and Los Angeles Times. And in August this year, this burgeoning street welcomed its newest store:

Owned and operated by Los Angeles native Julie Kim, Style | Gallery is an upscale, modern store featuring women’s designer labels at 30-60% off retail price. “The collections I carry are hip and not too trendy and have a cult following,” says Kim. “I wouldn’t sell anything I personally wouldn’t wear.” A fashion veteran who has been in the wholesale business for 18 years and whose mother also owns a store on Los Angeles Street for the past 30, Kim has carefully curated her boutique to offer her customers high-end clothing at an affordable price.

“There’s something for everyone,” says Kim. Through her relationships with these designers, Kim brings wearable, edgy and innovative labels such as Funktional, Clu, Maj, 213. Plus, Kim also has a growing stock of discounted, vintage luxury brands like Gucci and Prada purses.

Additionally, Style | Gallery hosts a trunk show and cocktail event every month on the Art Walk Thursday nights. At the soiree, Kim hangs art pieces on the walls, hosts a happy hour and features a brand on sale for 40-60% off.

Shoppers can also find handbags and jewelry at a comfortable $20-$40 range and an amazing sale rack of quality apparel at $15. Style | Gallery is still growing and will start to bring in more brand names. Word on Los Angeles Street is that a denim brand will be brought in…so stay tuned!

LA Fashion District Textiles a Contributor to SACHIKA's S/S 2012 Collection

The LA Fashion District has nearly 200 wholesale and retail textile businesses dedicated to serving apparel, home and accessory designers with the best domestic and international fabrics, trim and beading and at the best prices. Many designers rely on the resources in our district to create their seasonal collections. The duo designers of SACHIKA are a great example. They recently debuted for the very first time in Los Angeles their S/S 2012 collection at the October 2011 Concept LA Fashion Week. We chatted with them and learned what fabrics and trims they bought from the district to construct their fantasy-world inspired collection titled “Mermaid Paradise: Dance with the Ocean”.

When the identical twin designers, To-Tam and To-Nya from New York City, by way of Paris and Montreal, are not filming scenes for E!’s “Ice Loves Coco” reality show, they are constantly designing for either their celebrity clients or working on their own ventures (denim line, swimwear line, accessories). That’s why they are no strangers to the LA Fashion District. “It’s our home away from home,” says To-Nya.

“We love how extensive the LA Fashion District is. There are so many blocks and they all carry such different things at a great price range. And the bustling energy is infectious!” said To-Tam.

Shopping at the LA Fashion District is also a practicality. “Many suppliers in NY have a parent company in LA,” revealed To-Nya. “And since the prices get racked up in NY, we like to come to the LA Fashion District.”

So when it came time to create their spring 2012 collection, the twins shopped at their go-to stores on the corner of Maple and 9^th Streets. They searched for shiny, sequin fabrics that were complementary to the female body such as Ponte, silk satin and mixed novel jersey. “We know how the Modern Woman wants to feel in a dress, so we also always search for fabrications that will accentuate her body.”

The SACHIKA Modern Woman, according to the twins, is someone who’s fierce, independent and ambitious. This particular collection - inspired by mermaids – conveyed a strong, sensual mood that was all about celebrating the feminine body. The silhouettes of the cocktail dresses, tailored ready-to-wear and evening gowns were fitted, the breezy printed tops and pants evoked an island fantasy mood, and the color scheme resembled the sea and sand such as coral, blue, earth tones, ivory, charcoal and stone. One dress was even completely sequin, demonstrating a replica of fish scales.

Additionally, many of the fabrics the designers like to buy from the LA Fashion District are European fabrics, especially from Italy, because they like the cut and design. “A great outfit starts with great fabrics, you have to have the right ingredients,” said the SACHIKA Twins. They also buy designs with an Asian flair as the sisters like to infuse a sense of their heritage in their line.

Though LA Fashion Week came and went, the SACHIKA Twins are still progressing forward. “SACHIKA is a movement for us; it’s about having a vision and creating a lifestyle,” said the twins. The sisters are currently working on their own TV show. Whatever the project, we hope that the LA Fashion District continues to be a creative contributor!

Madera Owner Launches Signature Denim Line

Loyal shoppers of Madera, the on-trend, fast-fashion retail store in the Santee Alley, can now rejoice: Owner Maribell Madera is launching her own denim line called Rock & Love.

Almost a decade ago, the Calico, Mexico native opened up shop in the Santee Alley with her first store named after her family name. Her store sells all things trendy that one would find at a Forever 21; lace tops, juniors evening dresses, pleather jackets and printed tank tops. Now, she has three successful stores planted throughout “The Alley”, giving shoppers fashionable clothing at an affordable price. So as a retail veteran who understands what shoppers want to buy, Maribell saw a demand for bejeweled, yet comfortable jeans in the marketplace. Together with her brothers Juan and Luis, the Madera trio designed and produced a line of jeans that are now selling in the Madera stores.

These stretchy jeans made from a blend of cotton, spandex and polyester, come in a selection of washes, from light to dark to grey. They also come in a variety of rhinestone decorations on the back pockets. Maribell says they are competitively priced, but rest assured they will be within the Santee Alley price range. Designers Keep it Made in the USA at COEUR Tradeshow

The LA Fashion District has got a new tradeshow. COEUR, launched by Co-Founder/Creative Director Henri Myers of eM Productions, held its first show in the district’s Cooper Building this week perfectly coinciding with the Spring 2012 LA Fashion Market. This trade only event gave buyers already attending Market Week in the district a brand new, curated catalog of women’s fashion and gift & home accessories that spotlights jewelry, handbags and footwear. The show boasted exceptional designs from internationally respected designers who have a dedicated vision to personal inspiration and keeping production in the USA.

We were amazed at the designs by Gilda Grey, an accessories line manufactured and produced in Echopark. This collection is known for its art deco inspired pieces that give a nod to the 60’s but is modernized enough for everyday wear. The line is also kind to the environment and animals as it uses faux suede and naturally fallen feathers. Shoppers can purchase Gilda Grey at Anthropologie, Free People and at the end of October, at the brand’s website.

Another jewelry line reminiscent of the past was TomTom Jewelry. Made in Downtown Los Angeles and North Hollywood by formally trained architect Elena Howell, TomTom Jewelry is designed using digital fabrication techniques such as 3D printing and waterjet + laser jet cutting. The line's statement signature piece is the Chevron Aura crystal necklace which is inspired from the 1970’s.

Body jewelry received a spotlight at the COEUR show. Bliss Lau, a previous handbag designer with a degree in apparel design from Parsons School of Design, has her own line of body jewelry under her namesake. All of the jewelry is created and designed three-dimensionally using traditional garment draping techniques. Her jewelry is found at Heist in Venice and Fred Segal in Santa Monica.

COEUR Tradeshow was truly a one-stop-shop in all matters of accessories because they also included unique decorations for the home. Blithe and Bonny is a family run business based in Santa Cruz, CA that produces hand-crafted goods. Their signature item is the scented soy wax candle which is made from natural soy wax with custom phthalate-free fragrances and lead-free wicks. Not only are they sustainable, but they don’t lose out on the aesthetics either. The 40-hour candle comes in an attractive glass container and in a amazing selection of scents like grapefruit, lavender and jasmine and rose. Our favorite was the honey almond.

Sustainability was also an important principle at COEUR tradeshow which proved how unique the craftsmanship and inspiration behind each design was. One example is Directional Motivation, a “rugged meets refined” handbag line made of reclaimed army canvas and deadstock materials. The designer, Naomi Strauss, found the materials from a military surplus store and retained the originality of the materials (the stitching and name tags) used to produce each bag which shows signs of their travels. Strauss also keeps her manufacturing and production in Downtown Los Angeles and the hand-dying done in Los Angeles. Her handbags are sold at each of Gap’s 1969 Stores: 109 S. A beautiful jewelry line truly created out of inspiration and adventure is Flutter. Flutter is a range of hand-made costume jewelry inspired by its designer, Jill Golden’s, travels. Each season, Golden takes inspiration from her far-flung travels, translating her experience from beautiful places such as Paris, Morocco and Barcelona into her signature chain-wrapped and plated jewelry. The jewelry’s style is pretty but still edgy, timely and not trendy as Golden calls the “flutter” vibe. You can get your “flutter” vibe at Flutter’s online website.

For Gabriela Artigas, the world at large is what inspires her creativity and the smallest details of it find their way into her designs. Made in Los Angeles, Gabriela Artigas is a jewelry line that balances between delicateness and edginess. For example, her 14K alloy rings are structured, hard-edged in shape, but delicate in color as they come in bronze and rose gold. Additionally, Artigas’s line is a breath of fresh air as she is constantly reinventing her line. She rarely continues production of a certain piece after its initial run so we’re excited to see what she has in store for the next COEUR tradeshow!

Chef Gary Menes Pops Up at Tiara Cafe Mid-October

Seasoned Chef Gary Menes, whose resume includes Palihouse and Olive & Thyme, will be anchoring the kitchen at Tiara Cafe on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights starting from October 13 through November. Dinner commences at 6PM and runs until about 10PM. Reservations are not accepted.

Eater LA reports that the pop-up will utilize only Tiara’s 12-seat counter, based on a sushi-bar concept. “It’s like a communal table: you’re being fed and served by the same guy who’s preparing the food,” Menes says. The main dining room of Tiara, which is typically closed at night, will be cordoned off while the pop-up operates.

Tiara's five-course menu, priced at $46, focuses on ultra fresh proteins and “things just out of the ground.” Menes plans to source produce and eggs from the Growing Experience, an outreach program for inner-city youth in Long Beach, as well as community gardens. A flight of four wines can be added for an extra $24.

We are excited to have the addition of guest Chef Menes. His presence will be a great attraction to the LA Fashion District's nightlife! For Menes, the temporary installment will help him experiment with the concept of opening his own restaurant in downtown. Let's hope it's in the LA Fashion District!

YMI Parties for Its B-Day at CMC

It was the end of the first day at the Majors Market at the California Market Center, and denim label YMI celebrated with a party for its 10th anniversary at the CMC Lobby. House duo Posso played while guests dined on spicy tuna rolls and edamame hummus from hip Japanese restaurant Katsuya. The CMC Lobby was the top place to throw the party said David Vered, president of YMI. He first thought of starting a denim line while working at trade shows at the CMC more than a decade ago.

Since then, he built it up to a $40 million company that sells jeans to Nordstrom, Belk’s, JC Penney, Deb Shops and Tilly’s among others prominent retailers. For this Majors Market which ends Oct. 5, YMI debuted its handbag and footwear lines.

At the party, Vered also reflected on his 10-years making a denim business in Los Angeles. “It’s a helluva ride,” he said. Word!

Sixty Second Street Boutique Brings Uptown Style at a Downtown Price

The revitalization of Downtown Los Angeles has been a steady and promising project in recent years. Countless numbers of restaurants, bars/lounges and retail stores have been popping up all over the center. And the growth in the LA Fashion District has been part of that.

Named after owner Arell Hughes's childhood street in Oakland, CA, Sixty Second Street is the newest retail store to make its home in the neighborhood. The store, with its unique and personalized decor and eye-catching visual merchandising, looks like one would find on the famed shopping strip, Melrose Ave. Arell, a seasoned wardrobe stylist who has worked with R&B Singer Kelly Rowland, hopes that Sixty Second Street will fill a need that many shoppers not only in the LA Fashion District, but in Downtown, are looking for: fashionable, trendy clothes for a low price point.

“Downtown is up and coming and I wanted to bring a store that will capture that urban vibe," said Arell. "But most importantly, I wanted to give people a store where they can shop for style, but at a Downtown price."

The boutique is amazingly affordable, which is a great competitive edge among the other retail stores in the district. Also, what's great is that Sixty Second Street keeps the business within the Fashion District! Its vendors are predominantly from the district’s wholesale businesses, including the San Pedro Wholesale Mart. The store also holds frequent sales. They’re having one right now to make room for their new fall merchandise. Arell also acts as the store’s trend forecaster. She keeps an eye out for trends in magazines and on celebrities and brings them into the store. For example, some of their fall gears to anticipate are: fur jackets, sequin tops, textures, oversized sweaters, off-the-shoulder tops, bulky cuffs, jewelry and items with a pop of color.

Other specialties that Arell wants to add to the store are cocktail reception soirees and plus-size apparel.

The LA Fashion District's LA Flower Market just got greener. On Tuesday, September 27, 2011, the LA Flower Market held a press conference that officially welcomed the installation of a 280kw Solar Electric System that will now harness power from the brightest star to generate energy for their many vendors that sell flowers. This amazing feat marks the LA Flower Market as the largest privately owned commercial system that LADWP has in their system at this time, with 1,246 Schuco USA solar panels in place.

Councilwoman Jan Perry, chair of the Energy and Environment Committee; the Los Angeles Flower Market of Los Angeles; the Board of Directors of the American Florists Exchange which includes the LA Fashion District Executive Director Kent Smith; and the LADWP were present to help celebrate this milestone in transporting the historic facility into the 21st century.

"It is very fitting that the largest flower market in the United States is leading the way for the present and future of renewable energy. This solar project is an example of how sustainability and growth can coexist and flourish," said Councilwoman Perry. "I commend the Los Angeles Flower Market for championing green energy."

Here are some benefits that the solar system installation will provide for the LA Flower Market:

Reduce 8,724 tons of CO2 over 25 years
Provide estimated savings of $748,276 over 25 years

The Fashion Business Inc. (FBI) presents CALIFORNIA DREAMING...A FASHION CELEBRATION FOR A CAUSE. This special fundraiser event will celebrate Los Angeles as a global fashion center, one that welcomes cultural diversity and nurtures creativity, on Thursday, October 20th, from 6 – 10 pm at the beautiful Downtown Los Angeles venue Vibiana.

This entertaining, exclusive preview of California’s established and emerging talent, co-produced by Bubblefish Media and the FBI, will include the best of Southern California and the return of the Moss Adams Fashion Innovator Award (MAFI). The show will feature a runway presentation of capsule collections from LA’s best fashion designers. From surf and street, to junior and contemporary as well as high-end edgy and celebrity red carpet looks, the high energy show will cover every base. A reception featuring entertainment, cocktails, and hors d’ oeuvres will be held in the atrium, preceding the fashion show.

We attended Macy's Passport Glamorama on Friday, September 23 at the LA Fashion District's Orpheum Theatre. It was an AMAZING show filled with electrifying performances by Far East Movement and Cee Lo Green as well as visually appealling fashion installations by collections from Rachel Roy, Armani Exchange and Macy's Impulse, just to name a few. A special tribute was also given to AIDS activist Elizabeth Taylor that commemorated her courageous support to fight this serious disease. Macy's Glamorama was set to help benefit for AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) and Project Angel Food.

After the event, hundreds of fashionable attendees headed over to the California Market Center for an exclusive after-party. Free make-up touch ups by MAC, open bars and gourmet buffets, photo booths, gift bags and much more were enjoyed by all. WGSN: Global Retail Trends 2012

With 2012 approaching, WGSN hosted their Global Retail Trends seminar at the California Market Center on Tuesday, September 13, 2011. They shared various insights and analysis on global consumer attitudes, retail trends and innovations that will impact businesses. Some of these insights include retailers to refine and refocus their efforts on customer service and develop sophisticated ways for a refined shopping experience. Through the use of social networking to creating a strategic visual presentation, here are the major tips retailers need to take heed for 2012:

1. Convenience

For online retailers, making the shopping process convenient for their customers is extremely crucial and is a key factor in keeping their customers coming back.

For example, Zappos, the largest online shoe store, offers free shopping BOTH ways on their products including a 365-day return policy and 24/7 friendly customer service.

Another example is L.L. Bean. They offer a relaxed return policy and promise a lifetime guarantee in which if their customers are not satisfied, they can return anything purchased at any time.

Mobile shopping, aka “M-Commerce”, is also gaining relevance in the online shopping industry. For example, French Connection, Zara, Mulberry and Mark & Spencer all allow their Facebook fans to browse their products on their Facebook and mobile phone.

Additionally, Asos was the first online store to let their Facebook fans shop its entire collection via Facebook.

2. Brick and Mortar

WGSN says the trend for 2012 is to move towards the "white-box" look, which is a simpler decor and more efficient use of space. Here are some examples:

H&M, Amsterdam - the use of white in the decor and lights create a clean atmosphere
and makes the clothes the center point

Kochhaus, Berlin - they efficiently and strategically placed all the products
needed to create a dish in one place so that customers can conveniently purchase the items

Zara, Rome - a clean, no-fuss environment and with some sustainable features

Shangxia, Shanghai

3. Gender Neutrality

Not to be confused with cross-dressing, gender neutral is becoming prominent in the retail space, fashion and on the runway. For example, “femi-men” model Andrej Pejic has been receiving much attention due to his gender neutral look.

Manufacturers are also embracing this trend by producing gender neutral mannequins

Brands are using the unisex fashion/couple styling in their ads.

4. Transform

In visual merchandising, WGSN advises retailers to add features in the retail environment that will interest the customers and get them to stay awhile.

Chanel + Colette pop-up, Paris - the raised platform acts as an interesting feature in the store

Chanel, Selfridge boutique - the Chanel section is fashioned like the perfume bottle

Mulberry, London - the use of pods and huts make for an interesting use of space

Oxygen Boutique - the triangular fixture brings the focus in on the rack of clothes

Alter, Shanghai - the upside down mannequins give an interesting, skewed perspective

5. Mood Retail/Heritage

Many designers are bringing their personal home comforts into their retail stores which makes their customers feel connected with the brand and also acts as a place of discovery.

A Current Affair: Pop-up Vintage Marketplace this Weekend!

A Current Affair, started by private dealer Richard Wainwright and Scout boutique owner Joey Grana, is holding the pop-up shopping event this weekend Saturday, September 24 - Sunday, September 25 at the LA Fashion District's Cooper Building. This season's A Current Affair will be hosted by Wren designer Melissa Coker. Coker will curate a special exhibit of 10 looks pulled together from over 25 participating exhibitors. All pieces chosen for the exhibit will be available for purchase.

At this two-day event, over 25 premier vintage retailers and private dealers from Los Angeles and beyond will be brought together to offer incredible vintage finds. Shoppers will have a unique opportunity to scour through a select assortment of vintage apparel, jewelry, accessories, eyewear, and ephemera including the likes of Azzedine Alaïa, Balmain, Chanel, Chloe, Comme des Garcons, Givenchy, Issey Miyake, Halston, Lanvin, and Yves Saint Laurent.

Additionally, artist Edith Abeyta will create a site specific installation. Using found clothing, she will re-purpose them as sculptural tents and trees. This exhibit will mark the first collaborative effort between A Current Affair and a local artist.

A Decade of Fabulous! Acquisitions at FIDM

The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM) is currently exhibiting their Fabulous! Ten Years of FIDM Museum Acquisitions, 2000-2010 at their Downtown Los Angeles campus, which sits just a couple blocks from the LA Fashion District. The lavish exhibition features an outstanding collection, since its founding in 1978, of Western fashion dating from the 1800 to present.

Among the 175 garments and accessories worn by men, women and children are a white gauze French empire gown, a luxurious embroidered court suit worn by composer Johann Hummel, a Redfern court gown with regulation eleven–foot–long train and a museum–commissioned lace peacock motif Alexander McQueen couture gown.

The exhibition runs from 10a-4p, Tuesday through Saturday from September 13-December 17, 2011. Admission is free and is open to the public.

The Los Angeles Gift & Home Market will start Sunday, September 18 through Tuesday, September 20 and will be attended by buyers from major retailers, specialty boutiques and interior designers from all over the world. Tribal influences, inspired by Santa Fe, N.M., Mayan and Aztec symbols and a dash of mysticism, are taking a spotlight this fall as fashion heads into Navajo prints, fringed suede, gaucho pants and chunky Peruvian sweaters. In the Cooper Building, Misty Castillo, US Sales Manager of Closed, busily answered several phone calls and confirmed last minute appointments in preparation for this week’s ENK Show in Las Vegas. ENK is a tightly merchandised event directed towards fine retailers, featuring contemporary brands in full sportswear, denim, dresses, accessories and footwear for men and women. From August 22-24, Closed will showcase their women’s summer 2012 collection at the highly anticipated, influential tradeshow. Appropriately enough, the anticipation is vice versa. Closed is one of the hottest, European brands hitting the contemporary US market today – and its home base is in Los Angeles.

Having a strong background in denim (Hudson, Citizens of Humanity, Adriano Goldschmied) and working internationally at the time, Misty saw a Closed store in Switzerland and immediately knew it would fill a need in America.

“It was so fresh, so new, I fell in love with it right away,” Misty said. “It had the American basics like tops and cardigans, but with a European twist.”

After a few calls and meetings, Misty got the green light. In 2010, she launched Closed in the US and made the LA Fashion District its headquarters. “I love the aesthetic and feel of the Cooper Building [in the Fashion District]. It’s very modern and is really the up-and-coming building here,” said Misty. “Plus, all the denim companies are in Los Angeles.” Similarly, Misty’s husband Eduardo Castillo also saw a need in the LA Fashion District. He recently opened Pattern Bar with partner Alejandro Meza, a restaurant that has really enhanced the excitement in the district’s nightlife.

What has only been a little more than a year since its launch, Closed has been very successful; they are already in various top accounts such as specialty stores Ron Herman, American Rag and Traffic.

Basics and denim in bold colors in the men's collection

Dubbed the “J.Crew of Germany”, the Closed collection is casual and sophisticated, expertly translating trends into a timeless look. For example, their basic bottoms come in different washes and fits for each season, including flare, straight, skinny and cropped in dark, light, patchwork and more. For the spring and summer, the brand infused color with denim and chinos in brights and neons. For summer 2012, it’s all about soft fabrics, neon colors and easy, airy silhouettes.

Moreover, what’s unique about the brand is that it is one of the few that are a lifestyle collection. Though it started in Italy in the 1970s, Closed was relaunched in 2005 by three friends Gordon Giers, Hans Redlefsen and Til Nadler in Hamburg, Germany. They expanded the brand into shoes, belts and sportswear while denim and chinos remains the core of the company’s collection.

Alternative Apparel Talks "How to Drive Brand Awareness in a Retail Setting"

24Seven hosted the “How to Drive Brand Awareness in the Retail Industry” seminar this summer at the California Market Center for retailers to gain insight on the importance of a retail space. The guest speakers were Danny Gonzales and Ari Bloom, the creative and brand management experts behind Alternative Apparel’s newest flagship store in Venice, CA. Gonzales and Bloom talked about the concept behind Alternative Apparel’s newest brick and mortar retail store, described the design process and explained why the store is a vital extension of the brand.

Arguably one of Los Angeles’s most popular destinations for shopping, dining and nightlife, Venice’s Abbot Kinney Boulevard embodies the diverse, high-low culture and casual, laidback lifestyle that drive people in droves to the West Coast. Moreover, its eclectic hippie-meets-hipster personality is parallel to Alternative Apparel’s brand. Alternative Apparel produces comfortable clothing using alternative materials safe to the environment and is a strong advocate of these social causes. So, Venice was the perfect community for Alternative’s first flagship retail store.

In a shaky economy and a competitive retail market, Alternative Apparel may seemed to be taking a risk. But Bloom, Vice President of Retail and Consumer Strategy and an MBA Harvard Business School graduate, said otherwise. “The economy is on shaky ground, but having a physical store is a sure way to give a personalized experience to our customers,” said Bloom. “It’s really hard to present your look and feel without a store and if you’re not in control of it. And it helps that real estate is cheap right now.”

With a lot of real estate available, it was important for Alternative Apparel to be selective. “No street is created equally,” Bloom further stated. To find the right one, Gonzales, Bloom and their team researched the old fashioned way. They staked out at the Venice location for hours watching people. Some of the information they recorded were what time was foot traffic the highest? Which direction did people walk in? And what was their median age? These were pertinent information that helped the team decide if the location would be profitable.

In the end, the brand chose an abandoned 1,700-square foot, 1920s Craftsman-style home in which Gonzales, a 20-year interior design veteran who has worked for Giorgio Armani and Henri Bendel, refashioned the interior with mixed materials, recycled fixtures and reclaimed surfaces to capture Alternative’s vintage-inspired vibe and hand-crafted touch.

“The look is sophisticated and urban with subtle details in the fabrics, painted treatments and materials used throughout the space,” Gonzales describes, adding that his favorite elements include vintage doorknobs, used shipping crates and recycled wood panels.

The visual team also included a newly remodeled exterior that was consistent with the environmental, social aspect of the brand. Gonzales landscaped a beautiful garden inspired by New York City’s High Line Park where customers can sit and connect with nature, which is a unique aspect in a retail setting.

Another notable attribute of the store that provides a branded experience to its customers is the store’s use of technology. “Consumer behavior is affected by technology,” said Bloom “The industry is afraid of using it, but it’s so critical.” Bloom infused advanced technology throughout the store with Wi-Fi internet connection, store only discounts and promotions, wireless checkout stations, touch screen computers with hands-on social media interaction and Foursquare integration. “These design features and technological innovations have never been seen before in a retail apparel setting,” said Bloom. “It’s an opportunity for us to build more direct relationships with Alternative customers and we look forward to furthering our connection to the Venice community.”

Last night, the LA Fashion District joined T&A Showroom, ShopShareLove.com, and Secret Service Showroom for the Rooftop Love! Lounge, a rooftop soiree to celebrate LA Fashion Market. The event completely took over the entire 824 Building on Los Angeles Street and showcased fashion showrooms and art on each of its 5-floors. The highlight of the night was its rooftop lounge where they had a live DJ, bar and the breathtaking Downtown Los Angeles skyline as its backdrop.

Spring 2012 Trend Forecasts by Design Options, Inc

As a complimentary treat to LA Market Week attendees, the California Market Center hosted a Trend Presentation by Design Options. Fran Sude, President of the premier color and trend forecasting company, led the seminar and presented a sneak peek of the Spring/Summer 2012 trends.

"There's nothing like Los Angeles for trendspotting," said Fran Sude. "Everybody watches LA style". According to Fran, one of the unique qualities about Los Angeles is that Angelenos aren't afraid to be colorful. This is shown by the influence that some notable, colorful celebrities have on LA style such as:

Lady Gaga

Paris Hilton

Nicki Minaj

Another influence in trends and color is the nature of fashion itself. Fashion is cyclical; everything that was old at one point becomes new. Though the word "vintage" seems like a over-used word, but the truth is that trends from the 50s, 60s and 70s are constantly reviving.

One of the ways to make retro a trend is by adding color. "There's not a new color and probably never will be," said Fran. "It's all about repositioning color palettes and prints to create something new." Various designers, known for their prints and colors, have been successful in breathing new life into their brand through utilizing the power of innovate color positioning and prints.

Colors positioning and prints are not only seen in clothes, but they are also apparent in technology and in the home. Colorful and fun design covers for laptop skins, iPods and iPhones are widely used today and has become a profitable market. Over in the home sector, Fran says, there is an apparent cross over in colors and trends between apparel and the home. Here are some inter-industry fused trends for Summer 2012:

Tropical Retreat - designs that convey an exotic get-a-way

Fantasia - designs that are feminine and use lots of pastel

Organic Symmetry - textures that convey nature's geometry (i.e. patterns of a tree bark), minerals, tie-dye inspired

With colors and prints infused in a wide spectrum of industries, it demonstrates that color is really where fashion begins. "Customers see color first, not the silhouette," says Fran. "Color is what sells." This also means that the wrong color won't sell. So here are the Spring/Summer 2012 colors that Fran advises retailers and designers to watch out for.

1. Neutrals

Key colors: grey (use with brown or blues)
Fabrics: textured silks, crochet, cotton/rayon crepe

2. Mid-tones

Key colors: pink, lavendar, coral, purple
Fabrics: embroidered sheer, iridescent voile, hand-dye silk

3. Pop-hues

Key colors: yellow, lime green, neons
Fabrics: stretch spandex, patent leather, sequin

4. Summer-to-Fall Transitionals

Key colors: summer darks like indigo, blue, purple
Fabrics: embellishments, distressed denim, organically-dye
